Concept and qualities of the host

The Hostess is the one who receives her guests at home or who welcomes the clients of Restaurants, Hotels, Casinos; it also applies to the master of ceremonies in a meeting. It would then imply that it has to be a woman who covers the above; however, the «Host» is also assumed to be the male who assumes the role. In addition, the hostess has a very important commercial side, the hostess is also a seller!

What are the essential qualities in a hostess?

  • Proactivity to take the initiative, solve problems and act in the moments of greatest flow of customers. 
  • Empathy.  The ability to understand the other and know how to put yourself in their place is essential for those who work in customer service and exercising it is an obligation for any Host.
  • Responsibility for our role and tasks within the establishment.
  • Resolute ability to handle setbacks that may arise, whether with clients or co-workers. For this we must always have at hand emergency telephones, taxis or transport services, suppliers, and all the information that could be relevant and useful. 
  • Great capacity for teamwork since the work within a gastronomic place depends on all sectors for its correct operation, if you do not work together everything can fail as a chain reaction.
  • Sympathy and kindness to receive our customers in the best way and make their stay an experience from check-in to check-out.
  • Commercial vision to know how to manage and strengthen customers, to build a portfolio of clients.
  • Good appearance is essential for this position. We must have a careful and neat appearance since we are the first and last image that the client has of the place.
